Grand Master Review - 3 Stars

Grandmaster, the new movie from the director B. Unnikrishnan, is an engaging flick. The director has managed his best and has succeeded in telling a suspense story with all the necessary ingredients that can be expected in a malayalam suspense movie. The movie keeps you on the edge of the seat throughout the movie that has a length of nearly 2 hours and 10 minutes, a decent running time.

Chandrashekhar (Mohanlal) is a police officer, who has assumed charge of the Metro Crime Stopper Cell, and who finds it extremely difficult to keep things in focus. He is a divorcee who loves his daughter more than anything. It has been ten years since his wife (Deepthi) left him. Of all the letters coming to Metro Crime Stopper Cell, Chandrashekhar chooses one letter randomly, and that turns out to be a letter stating that serial killings are going to be undertaken and gives clue to the first crime. Chandrashekhar immediately takes charge on the case, and the further proceedings along with the neat climax forms the story.

It has been Mohanlal all the way, actually I am pretty happy to see him trimmed for this one. A 'not very excited' Chandrashekhar is great to view on screen. Priyamani as Deepthi was good. Anoop Menon was convincing. Mithra Kurian had put on too much make up. Negative marks for her. Not to mention Babu Antony. After a long time, it has been a beautiful performance from this man, who even without many dialogues, was simply superb.

The negative points in the film isn't there much to be told. The dialogue just before the interval scene where Chandrashekhar points about a clue that the killer has left, isn't told elsewhere in the movie. Maybe that dialogue was just packed for the interval punch.

On the overall, Grand Master turns out to be a decent entertainer for the holidays. Go for it!!

Mammootty In CBI Diary Part 5

Decks have been cleared for the fifth edition of the blockbuster Mammootty film 'Oru CBI Dairy kurippu', a rarity in the Malayalam film industry, according to its director K. Madhu.

Speaking to IANS, Madhu said that at a recent meeting with Mammootty and scriptwriter S.N.Swamy, they have decided that the fifth in the series is going to be a reality.

'Swamy has commenced his writing and once that is over, we will have another sitting. At the moment, the decision has been made and the name of the film, and all such things will be decided later. I will start to think on it again after I finish my present project and it should happen this year,' said Madhu.

The first in this series titled 'Oru CBI Diary Kurippu' was released in 1988 and it turned out to be one of the biggest grossers then. This provided Madhu the impetus to come out with Jagratha (1989), Sethurama Iyer CBI (2004), and Nerariyan CBI (2005).

Incidentally, in all these films Mammootty plays the role of a CBI officer Sethurama Iyer, who cracks complicated murder cases in all the four films with ease, but not without leaving the audience on the edge of their seats.

The background score of the film became quite popular, and years after the release of the first two sequels, became popular as mobile phone ringtones. All the sequels use the same background score, composed by music director Shyam.

'The rest of the cast and all other details will be decided at a later stage because at the moment, we are looking into the completion of the script,' said Madhu.

Incidentally, it was a quarter of a century back that Mammootty first donned the role of CBI officer Sethurama Iyer. The last time he did a sequel to this was seven years back and with his recent films failing to warm up the box office, the ageing superstar is certain to put his best in a role that has won him laurels.

Diamond Necklace Review - 3 Stars

The glad news folks, is that Lal Jose is back, and how! A deeply moving, illuminating and inspirational drama on love and the sense of loss, 'Diamond Necklace' is the most profound film that the director has gifted us with, as yet.

Dr. Arun (Fahad Fazil) is one of those many youngsters based in Dubai, who has been for long, living beyond his means, awestruck by the sights and scenes that the magical city has on offer. The squanderer however has a way with women, and before long has the fresh nursing assistant Lekshmi (Gauthami Nair) dancing to his tunes.

In 'Diamond Necklace', there is an open-ended exploration of everything that could possibly go wrong in a youngster's life as well as the lives of those with whom he connects at different planes. It's ironic that Dr. Arun is repeatedly commented for the positivism that his demeanor generates and yet the tragedy in his life seems a bit too contagious, stealthily spreading across to those vying for his affection.

The three women in his life - Lekshmi, Maya (Samvrutha Sunil) and Rajasree (Anusree) - aren't women who suffer from an identity crisis. Nor are they perplexed individuals who aren't sure as to what they want from their lives. On the contrary all three of them share a commonality in that their personal journals would carry a story about love and the trauma of simply being in love.

I'm sure we might differ quite a bit here, but Maya does emerge the toughest one among the lot, living the moment and simply refusing to bow down before the plans that have already been laid out before her. Lekshmi is impressive for not having turned out into a vengeful demon at being spurned; she's poised in the face a calamity, and moves elegantly ahead picking up whatever is left in her life. And Rajasree retains the quintessential essence of being a woman, and turns out to be the most endearing among the three of them!

Lal Jose's take on relationships in the film is charming and occasionally insightful. It's on his individual characters that he banks on, to craft this delightful romantic tale of a man who has walked quite a long way along the path of self-destruction. In doing so, the director leaves in tact the labyrinthine emotions that come to play.

It's interesting to see a structural resilience emerging gradually out of the narrative that starts off quite modestly. Some very familiar ideas converge together to a cohesive whole, and the transformation makes you feel good. Its refreshing to see the film sidestepping stereotypes, and focusing instead on the deeply humanistic story that it intends to tell.

Perhaps for a brief while, the film does tend to get a bit didactic when there is an attempt to draw in a second layer of a moral fable beneath the main story, where Venu (Sreenivasan), a family friend of Arun's takes the lead. There are suggestions that love abounds when you are poor, and the multimillionaire patient in the cancer ward further emphasizes that it all comes down to a sick bed eventually.

This is a film that could easily brag of inspiring performances from its relatively fresh and young cast. Fahad is imposing as the oncologist who realizes a bit too late, that the malignancy within his mind has spread far and wide. Samvrutha delivers a career best perhaps, and as a bonus looks gorgeous! The surprise packets of the film however are Gauthami Nair and Anusree; the former having come up with a delightful performance that is at once controlled and striking, and the latter for her spontaneity that is downright astounding!

How could I complete writing this review, without mentioning Sameer Thahir, who is without doubt, one of the best cinematographers we have these days. And the result is that Diamond Necklace looks visually stunning whether it be out in the hot Dubai deserts, or in the cool confines of a studio flat. Hats off Sameer, for the visual elegance that you have brought to the piece. And of course to Vidyasagar for those lilting melodies, with 'Nilaamalare...' leading the lot.

'Diamond Necklace' is a tender and hypnotically moving film, the serenity of which is quite deceptive. Underlying its silent sparkle is a fascinating tale, and the discerning viewer who can read between the lines, could unearth layers of meaning beneath its glint!

Mallu Singh [2012] Malayalam Movie Review - 1.5 Stars

What should have made 'Mallu Singh' interesting is a firm, appealing story, because this is the film that has the perfect backdrop already. Set in the rural locales of Punjab where there is a whole lot of mirth going on under the blazing sun; where nature stands one with man, 'Mallu Singh' lacks this one thing that it needed most!

No doubt there is a tale to tell, but it goes thus. Ani (Kunchacko Boban) goes to Punjab in search of a long lost brother Hari (Unni Mukundan) only to discover that the man has transformed into Hareender Singh. Confused beyond his wits, Ani determines to find out if Hareender is indeed Hari in disguise.

Mallu Singh, as one of the characters in the film rightly points out is Hitler Madhavankutty reincarnate, and would make mincemeat of anyone who dares look at his four sisters (played by Aparna Nair, Meera Nandan, Rupa Manjari and Shawlin).

There is a moral lesson that the film upholds; that having a hoard of enterprising young actors aboard will not save a film. The narrative is bound to be equally if not more important, and when a film falls shorts on that very vital feature, the results are bound to be dismal.

Usually the USP of all of Vyshakh's films is that they keep you entertained with harmless gags, even as the plot is not one to be boasted of. Unfortunately 'Mallu Singh' is infinitely low in the jokes department as well, and there are very few instances in it that would genuinely bring out a smile.

The story build up in a predictable manner leads to a conventional climax with no surprises in store. Eventually it all comes down to a stage when you realize that 'Mallu Singh' makes no special efforts to put across to the audience an inventive tale.

Unni Mukundan, who has earlier been seen in promising roles, does get launched as a real hero in 'Mallu Singh' but the kicks that he gets to deliver are a bit too inflated. He's definitely good, but the action sequences of the film stand out as the worst part and with each sturdy blow that Mallu Singh delivers the overall impact of the film is further weakened.

Shaji's frames are the best thing about the film, and perhaps it would be right to say that it's an achievement that he has succeeded to make you keep your gaze fixed on the screen despite the very mundane affairs that occur there. M Jayachandran's musical score is definitively impressive as well.

'Mallu Singh' disappoints you on multiple levels; regarding the story, the script and above everything else in its failure to proffer its talented lead actor a challenging role that could have made a whole lot of a difference.
